At the moment, more than 175 hospitals of different size take part in QUIPS.
During a pilot period, several parameters were analyzed in order to assess their suitability for becoming a quality index. In this process, we realized for example that the parameter "pain at rest" is hardly change-sensitive. Concerning patient satifsfaction, the parameter "pain intensity" is less important than "restrictions in body functions caused by pain" or the request for more analgesics.
So far, more than 300,000 datasets have been collected. The benchmark server, which was set up in 2004 and provides an online evaluation of data on a secure website, has continuously been improved since its entry into service. For this reason, the QUIPS project was able to gain a lot of practical experience. The following two examples will show some fields of our database's application.

Example no. 1:

One of the participating hospitals changed over from analgesic A to analgesic B. The clinical impression was that pain therapy changed for the worse. On the basis of our data sets, we were able to confirm this assumption and to show that the patient satisfaction decreased considerably (Fig. 3). The consequence was displacement of analgesic B.

Fig. 3: Change of quality outcome after alteration of pain therapy (NRS numeric rating scale; 0 meaning no pain and 10 meaning maximal pain) Please note: This demonstration shows that there might (!) be a correlation between a change of medication and the outcome quality of pain therapy. It does not provide evidence

Example no. 2:

One of the QUIPS sites managed to improve their results significantly by implementing standards in post operative pain treatment and by running training courses for staff (Fig. 4)
